Alexander, known as Alasdair Bàn, was born in 1798, the son of Angus MacLean and Jane MacLeod. He came to Berneray from Harris, becoming a tenant in old Ruisgarry by 1830, where he is listed in the rental roll as paying £5.17.6 annually. A crofter, he obtained 11 Ruisgarry (Quay) during the re-lotting of Ruisgarry. However, he lost the croft in the 1860s, becoming a cottar in Ludag.
