57644: HMS Comorin

The passenger ship Comorin of the P. & O. Steam Navigation Co Ltd, London was requisitioned by the Admiralty in September 1939 and converted to an armed merchant cruiser.

On 6 April 1941 HMS Comorin, under Capt. J.L. Hallett, (retired), RN, caught fire in heavy weather in the North Atlantic and had to be abandoned. Twenty men lost their lives and there were four hundred and fifty-five survivors. The wreck was shelled and sunk in position – 5434’N, 2120’W – the next day by the British destroyer HMS Lincoln
