64525: Marquis of Stafford

The Marquis of Stafford was a wooden Paddle Steamer built in 1849. It was owned by David Hutcheson and Company, the largest West Coast Steamer owners.

In the summer of 1851 it was engaged and provisioned by the Chamberlain of Lews, John Munro Mackenzie, acting on behalf of Sir James Matheson to take some 500 emigrants from Lewis to the Clyde where they embarked on larger ships for the voyage to Canada.

The Marquis of Stafford was able to pick up passengers at Ness and Tolsta. She was mainly used on the Poolewe to Stornoway route.
