36 Tolastadh bho Thuath

36 North Tolsta was a new croft in 1851. The first occupants were Angus Macleod, Annie Maciver and their six children: Isabella, Donald, Margaret, Annabella, John and Murdo. The family had previously lived at 10 Old South Tolsta. Annie Maciver died, in 1870 and Angus Macleod married again by 1873. He had had a child with his second wife, Henrietta Macaskill but this child died in infancy. Angus's brother's family lived with them: Donald Macleod, Mary Maclennan and their son John. This couple had a further two children, Louis and Bess before obtaining 58 North Tolsta in 1857. In the 1860's Angus's daughter, Annabella, became a cottar at 36 North Tolsta. In 1873 most of Angus's family emigrated to Canada and settled in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. Only his eldest daughter, Isabella stayed in Lewis.

In 1874, 36 North Tolsta passed to Kenneth Maciver, Mary Maciver and their five children: Murdo, Kenneth, Angus, Margaret and Christina. The couple had their last child, Mary at 36 North Tolsta. This daughter went on to have two children, Murdo and Kenneth, while living in the parental home. In due course 36 North Tolsta passed to the couple's son-in-law, Angus Maciver.

Angus Maciver married Christina Maciver and the couple had five children: Gormelia, Mary, Donald, Kenneth and John. Christina's sister, Mary, and her children, continued to live at 36 North Tolsta after her parents passed the croft to Angus. When Mary died, in 1919, and orphaned her two young sons, Angus and Christina raised them. In due course 36 North Tolsta passed to their youngest son, John.

John Maciver married Katie Ann Campbell and the couple had six children: four girls and two boys.

Annabella Macleod married Alexander Macrae and the couple became cottars at 36 North Tolsta. They had their first three children: Alexander, John and Ann at 36 North Tolsta. Their fourth child, Isabella, was born the year the family emigrated to Canada and settled at the Eastern Townships of Quebec. The family moved several times over the next few years, briefly returning to Inverness, before finally settling in the Eastern Townships of Quebec in the 1880's. The couple had nine children.
