Donald Mackenzie was married to Margaret Macdonald and the couple already had a daughter, Ann before they obtained 12 Old North Tolsta. Once settled the couple had a further six children: Donald, Mary, Margaret, Catherine, Norman and Christina. In 1853, when Old North Tolsta was cleared to make way for Tolsta Farm, the family obtained 48 North Tolsta.
