51546: Mealista Island, Lewis

Mealista Island, about 300 acres, lies just south of the village of Mealista. Ruined houses or sheilings indicate previous occupation and it is used as grazing by local crofters. Traditionally the stock was ferried across from Leac na h-Aiseig.

The island was the site of an episode of modern-day sheep rustling, when a large number of grazing sheep were taken off the island.
