102883: Mary Maclean

Mairi Iain Choinnich

Mary (1842-1906) was a daughter of John Maclean and Ann Macphail, 18 South Bragar.

At Carloway, in 1868, she married Donald Maclean, 4 South Bragar. Mary and Donald lived at 4 South Bragar and they had a daughter, Christina.  It is said that Mary's first husband was taking home peats in a creel when he saw some of the village men trying to pull a plank of wood to shore. Wood was very precious to the islanders at that time and he went to help them. While they were struggling with the wood a freak wave washed over them and Mary's husband was drowned.

Mary was widowed in 1869 and at Barvas in 1874, she married widower, Kenneth Macleod, 22 Garenin. Mary and Kenneth lived at 22 Garenin and they had three children.

Mary was widowed again in 1881.
