John (1883-1918) was a son of Alexander Smith and Christina Macleod, 6 Murrays Court, Stornoway. He moved to 2 Maciver Buildings, Stornoway.
In 1906 he emigrated to Canada on the SS Sicilian and moved to Montana, America. John was a Sergeant in the 16th Ambulance Company, 2nd Division, United States Army during the First World War and was killed in 1918. John is buried in St Mihiel American Cemetery, Thiaucourt, France Plot D, Row 8, Grave 22. His name is commemorated on the Lewis War Memorial, Stornoway and the Nicolson War Memorial.
