Roderick (1884-1959) was a son of James Smith and Margaret Maciver, who were cottars on the croft at 10 Branahuie. The family subsequently moved to Stornoway. 

His parents and siblings emigrated to Canada in the 1900s. It has been suggested that Roderick emigrated and worked in Saskatchewan. He married Ann Mary Macleod, Canada and formerly of 7 Brenish. The couple lived in Saskatchewan and when Mary became homesick, they returned to Stornoway and they had a family
