John was the son of Archie MacDonald. John was living in Baile mhic Phail in 1752 when he was visited by three men from Berneray: Finlay Morrison, Roderick MacLeod and Angus Ferguson. The men were seeking some culprits who had illegally gathered seaweed. They offered John the bribe of a load of seaweed from Berneray every time he informed them about Uist people taking seaweed from rocks belonging to Harris. He presumably accepted the bribe, since they went off to see the culprits, who paid a fine and were so hospitably entertained and supplied with drink that they returned home to Berneray empty handed.
