Joan (1939-2022) was a daughter of Murdo Buchanan and Peggy Macritchie, 14 Brenish. She attended Mangersta and Valtos Schools and after leaving school she went to Duncraig Castle College. After the course in domestic science there, Joan commenced her nurse training in Duke Street Hospital, Glasgow, continuing her career in the Southern General Hospital and the Western Infirmary.
Joan married John Long from Glasgow and they had one daughter. After spending some of their retirement in Glasgow they moved to Ellon in Aberdeenshire, where they spent 10 years before moving to Maryhill, Stornoway.
