19100: Isabella Macdonald
Iseabail Iain Dhòmhnaill
Isabella (1845-1890) was the fourth child of John Macdonald an Domhnallach and Catherine Stewart. She was brought up in Kyles House Tigh a Chaolais, Croir with her nine siblings.
In 1878, she married Dr Roderick Ross formerly of Keose. Isabella and Roderick lived at Crobeg, 33 Kenneth Street, Valtos and Borve. The couple had two children.
The Victorian novelist William Black (1841-1898) was a friend of the Macdonald family and Bernera forms the setting of the major part of his novel A Princess of Thule. The heroine of the book, Sheila Mackenzie, was drawn from Isabella.
