44579: Donald Mackinnon

Donald Mackinnon (1920-1940) was a son of Duncan Mackinnon and Mary Macleod, 7 Cromore.

He joined the Royal Naval Reserve, S/N AX20733, on February 21, 1939. His record indicates that he was 5ft 8½ in tall with dark brown hair, brown eyes and a fresh complexion. Donald was a fisherman on Stornoway registered fishing boats incuding the Welcome Home.

He was Mobilised on July 28, 1939 and served in the Royal Navy for only one year. He was based at HMS Victory and aboard HMS Wren. Donald lost his life HMS Wren was sunk by German dive bombers.

Donald died aged 19 and his name is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval War Memorial.
