Reverend Hugh MacDonald (1813-1888) from 1 Torlum, Benbecula was the Established Church minister on Berneray between 1852 and 1878. In 1878 he relocated to Trumisgarry Manse, North Uist.

The historian Alick Morrison, writing in Orain Chaluim relates that once, while marrying a couple the minister asked

"Do you Dugal MacStrool take this wife to be your woman?"

Rev Hugh is also referred to in the poem Banais Moir Bhig, published in the same book.
