Donald (1874-1919) was a son of Donald Macphail and Marion Macleod, 11 Borrowston.
On 29 March 1899, he enrolled in the Royal Naval Reserve under Service Number K803 and re-enrolled under QA1363, QB1057 and C1006. Donald was a fisherman on Stornoway, Banff and Fraserburgh fishing boats and in 1911 he worked in Canada.
In Carloway, in 1900, he married Mary Mackay, 29 Knock Carloway. Donald and Mary settled at 11 Borrowston and they had five children.
Donald was Mobilised and served in the Royal Navy in the First World War, based at HMS Pembroke and aboard HMS Campania. He lost his life in the Iolaire Disaster and is buried in Dalmore Cemetery.
His name is commemorated on the Carloway War Memorial, the Lewis War Memorial, the Iolaire Memorial at Holm and the Iolaire Memorial, Stornoway
