92839: Mary Macdonald

Mary (1791-1875) was the daughter of Donald Macdonald and Mary Mackenzie. It is not known where the family were living at the time of her birth; her paternal grandparents were from Ness and her father does not appear on the sub-tenants list of Old South Tolsta Tack, in 1820.

Mary married widower John Campbell. It is not known where they were living during their early marriage, or where their first five children were born.

In 1830 the family settled at 1 Old South Tolsta, and it was there that the last of Mary’s six children was born.

Mary was widowed in 1842.

In 1843 Mary exchanged crofts with Angus Macleod and settled at 10 Old South Tolsta.

In 1851, during the croft relottings, she obtained 40 North Tolsta.

In 1853 she lost 40 North Tolsta, and it passed to Angus Murray.

Mary went on to became a cottar at her daughter Effie’s croft: 60 North Tolsta.
