John Macdonald

John Macdonald

John Macdonald (born 1846) was a son of Alexander Macdonald and Margaret Smith, 5 Garyvard. The family later moved to 10 Garyvard.

In Lochs, in 1876, he married Catherine Macmillan, 12 Kershader. John and Catherine settled at 10 Garyvard and they had five children.

John was a stonemason and built his own house at 10 Garyvard. John also served as Parish Councillor for Lochs for a short time. He was referred to an 'An Cuaigear' (the Quaker), due to his resemblance to the Quakers of the time.

The family moved to Stornoway after the First World War and the croft was sold to Alexander Macleod, 6 Calbost. for £120.00 which was considered a good price for a substantial white house.
