At Laxay, in 1879, he married Mary Mackenzie, 7 Keose. John and Mary lived at 7 Keose and they had two children.
John was widowed in 1884 and returned to Smithy Cottage.
At Balallan, in 1889, he married Marion Macleod, 7 Balallan. John and Marion lived at Smithy Cottage and they had five children.
John and Marion owned a Tearoom in Tarbert.
