Murchadh Dhòmhnaill Alasdair
Murdo (1920-1996) was a son of Donald Macleod and Margaret Macrae, 11 Cromore. The family moved to Hillside House, Caros, Cromore in the 1930s.
On 13 October 1938 Murdo enrolled with the Royal Naval Reserve, Service Number A20343 and re-enrolled under D1X7867. His record states that he was 5ft 9½ in tall with brown hair, brown eyes, a fresh complexion and a scar on his forehead. Murdo was an Inshore fisherman on the Stornoway registered fishing boat the Columbine SY180.
He was Mobilised on 3 September 1939 and served in the Royal Navy throughout the Second World War. He was advanced to Leading Seaman and stationed at HMS Pembroke, HMS Cormorant, HMS Europa, HMS Eaglet and served aboard the SS Dunluce Castle, HMS Irwell. In 1943 and 1944 he was granted three weeks Agricultural Leave in Cromore.
He is mentioned in Roll of Honour: Pairc, Second World War.
In Lochs, in 1956, he married Christina Macaulay, 22 Cromore. Murdo and Christina settled at Hillside House and they had two children.
