38007: Schools in Uig

The first known school in Uig was at Timsgarry, on the shore below Baile na Cille manse, with John Macaskill, cousin in law of Rev Hugh Munro, as first schoolmaster, c1796. This may have been the Society in Scotland for Propagating Christian Knowledge school listed below.

Accounts of the time by biographers of the evangelical minister, Rev Alexander Macleod, and indeed his own letters, maintain that there was virtually no education in Uig when he arrived in the district in 1824. Great ignorance, including of spiritual matters, was said to prevail throughout Uig. There appears to have been at least one Gaelic School in operation at the time, however, as John Macleod came from Skye to teach there in the days of the previous minister Rev Hugh Munro, with whom he was at odds. The availability of education improved rapidly and by 1827 there were 600 in education, and by 1834 there were 13 Sabbath Schools.
