John (born 1843) was the son of Donald Nicolson and Mary Macdonald of 1 Coll. His mother died in 1862 and his father later married Margaret Murray, 54 Back.
He married Jane Finlayson of 20 Coll. John and Jane were cottars at 20 Coll where they had four of their eight children.
In 1873 the family emigrated to Canada and settled in the Eastern Townships of Quebec.
