Mary Irving Hunter (1855-1939) was the daughter of John Hunter and Margaret Ann Stevenson and a twin of Elizabeth. She was born in Gretna Green. Her father was a shepherd and the family moved around the country for his work. In 1860 the family moved to the Isle of Lewis and settled at Tolsta Farm. In 1866 they moved to Barvas Farm.
After her father's death Mary and her mother moved to Stornoway. Mary married Torquil Macleod from Stornoway. Mary and Torquil lived in Point Street where they had two of their seven children. By 1891 the family were living at Bayhead and in 1901 they had moved Cardross Street, Dennistoun, Glasgow.
Mary's mother lived with the family.
