Iain Mhurchaidh

John (1766-1865) was a son of Murdo Macdonald  and Unknown Mackenzie from Scoraig, Lochbroom.

John began his career as a schoolmaster in the Lochcarron area. He then did estate work and farming; he was a tacksman at Crobeg and Scoraig.

In June 1802 John married Mary Ross Maciver, of Stornoway. John composed many songs including Mo Mhairi Laghach which was dedicated to his young bride. The couple had twelve  children, including a set of twins. Three of these children died in infancy. The family moved to 13 Point Street, Stornoway in the 1850s.

John lived until he was 99
