John (born 1817) was the son of Murdo Mackenzie and Margaret Macrae The family had a connection to Gress Mill. In 1833 the family obtained 8 Old South Tolsta and in 1834 they left to become cottars in Old Back. In 1851 the family moved to 46 Back.
John married Ann Mackenzie of 50 Back. The couple settled at 73 Coll and they had eight children.
In 1873 the family emigrated to Canada and settled in Eastern Townships of Quebec.
