John (1854-1894) was the son of Donald Macleod and Christina Smith, cottars at 67a North Tolsta.

John married Catherine Maciver of 23 Coll. The couple settled  were cottars on his brother's croft at 74 North Tolsta. They were cottars later at 23 Coll. The couple had five children.

The entire family contracted a contagious disease, probably Tuberculosis, from which they all died except the eldest son, Donald.
