64476: 17 Tong

The first tenant of 17 Tong was Colin Campbell (1792-1885) son of Roderick, Harris. The family came from Lochs and in 1850 Colin  obtained 16 Tong from his nephew and 17 Tong passed to Mary Murray, the widow of George Macleod who passed 17  Tong passed to her son, Kenneth (1836-1917)

In 1908 James Thomson, of 15 Tong, bought the croft.

There is conflict between sources on this address. This may simply be down to some sources not being aware of the Campbells living at 17 Tong before obtaining 16 Tong. The information here is taken from “Tong: the Story of a Lewis Village” which provides a detailed account of the family on page 112.
