25877: Roderick Martin

Roderick (1935-1907) was a son of Malcolm Martin and Ann Mackenzie, 21 Balallan.

In Lochs, in 1859, he married Mary Morrison, 15 Laxay. Roderick and Mary settled at 21b Balallan where they had six children. Roderick sold the croft at 21b Balallan to Donald Macleod, 18 Balallan.

The family moved to Crobeg Farm in 1876 with Roderick succeeding Daniel Macdonald. The rent for Crobeg Farm was £50.00 per annum  in 1880 and despite local disagreement Roderick was given Orinsay and Steimreway with an increase in rent to £130.00 per annum. Roderick had to remove his cattle from the grazing at Rossaidh, the island off Cromore as it was added to Grimshader's holding. Subsequently the rent was reduced to £110.00 per annum.
